International Project for Children - Monarch Butterfly Simulation

In September the children of the Methodist Preschool will be learning about Monarch Butterfly Migration by participating in a Symbolic Butterfly Migration project with children from Canada, the United States, and Mexico. During the week of September 20th the preschool children will be creating butterflies to participate in the special project in correspondence with the real monarch’s journey south. Our paper butterflies will be sent to children in the small town in Mexico who live beside the monarch’s winter sanctuaries. The entire eastern population of North American monarch butterflies is resting in Mexico for the winter. They will protect the paper butterflies they receive from children throughout the United States and Canada for the winter months. The children in this region will send the paper butterflies back to us when the real monarch’s departure from Mexico is announced, sometime in March 2011. The symbolic butterflies will carry a special message from the Mexican students back to the children in our preschool. Throughout this experience, our curriculum will include lessons about monarch butterflies, conservation, and cooperation. Please contact the preschool if you would like to participate in the event. Everyone is welcome. 925-837-2788
